RIDGELY — Two men have been charged and arrested following a Caroline County Sheriff's Office investigation into an ATM that was reportedly tampered with in Ridgely.
According to a news release from the Caroline County sheriff's office Monday, Dragio Mircea-Costin and Alexandru Popescu have been charged with tampering with an ATM located at Queenstown Bank on Sixth Street in Ridgely.Â
Police said that on the night of April 24, Caroline County sheriff's deputies responded to a report of potential tampering with the ATM at Queenstown Bank. According to the news release, deputies located a skimmer and SD card on the ATM.
Police said installing illegal skimming devices on ATMs, gas pumps and merchant point-of-sale terminals allows people to steal credit and debit card information so they can encode that data onto another card with a magnetic strip.
According to the news release, a broadcast alert was issued during the investigation. Police said Maryland State Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that matched the description of the one provided in the alert and Mircea-Costin and Popescu were identified as the occupants of the vehicle.
According to the news release, Mircea-Costin and Popescu are Romanian nationals. Police said that since their arrest, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued detainers for both men.
Police said this incident is still under investigation. Those with information related to the case can reach out to the Caroline County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division.
