CAMBRIDGE — The Maryland Office of the Attorney General identified an armed man killed by a Cambridge police officer Thursday, as well as the officer involved in the shooting.
The deceased was identified Monday as 30-year-old Ryan Garcy of Cambridge. No further information about Garcy was released Monday.
Cpl. Jacob Weber was identified as the officer who shot Garcy. Weber has been with the Cambridge Police Department for six years and is with the patrol division, according to the attorney general’s office.
Weber has been placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation is finished, according to Cambridge Police Chief Justin Todd.
According to a release from the Cambridge Police Department, Weber shot Garcy multiple times after Garcy allegedly “advanced on officers” with the knife. The attorney general’s office said last week that officers unsuccessfully deployed tasers twice before Garcy was shot.
Garcy was transported by Maryland State Police Aviation to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, where he later died.
According to Todd, this is Cambridge’s first fatal police shooting in about 15 years.
The incident is being investigated by the Maryland attorney general’s office’s Independent Investigations Division, which investigates all officer-involved fatalities in the state. Todd said press releases and body-worn camera footage will be released to the public as part of the transparency process.
