CAMBRIDGE — Two students from Cambridge-South Dorchester High School were arrested on the second day of school after multiple fights broke out, Dorchester County Sheriff Jimmy Phillips said.
The school resource deputy alerted the Sheriff’s Office that a student was assaulting the school safety monitor. Before it was over, Phillips said several deputies and school staff were assaulted, and one staff member was taken to the hospital. Phillips did not disclose the extent of their injuries, but he said that everyone was going to be OK.
The school safety monitor received multiple blows to the head and was held down on the floor, and three deputies were spat on by students, Phillips said.
“That’s a biological thing, you just don’t know what you’re dealing with, now they have to get tests done,” Phillips said.
Phillips said the incident was prompted by something that happened outside of school. He did not provide further details on what incited the fighting.
The response from law enforcement was substantial, including 10 Cambridge police officers, seven sheriff’s deputies and five state troopers.
“A majority of law enforcement in our small geographical area was at C-SD,” Phillips said.
Public details are limited due to the involvement of juveniles, but a 15-year-old was arrested and charged with five counts of second-degree assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, failure to obey a lawful order, disturbing the peace, disrupting school activities, obstructing and hindering, and affray, according to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office press release.
The second student arrested was 14 years old. The student was charged with one count of second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order, disturbing the peace, disrupting school operations, obstructing and hindering, and affray, according to the press release.
“The crowd was actually larger than that (the two arrests). A lot of onlookers with their cameras and stuff,” Phillips said.
The two juveniles were taken to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, then released to their guardians with referrals made to the Department of Juvenile Services, according to the press release.
